Eta Sigma Philanthropy
Eta Sigma proudly hosts a year-long philanthropic program centered around fundraising for the Huntsman Cancer Institute, a cancer research center dedicated to the cause of ending cancer. Our philanthropy events are intended to not only raise money for the cause of ending cancer, but also to provide a platform for those affected by cancer and to unite the Irvine community.
PHILANTHROPY STRUCTURE
Our Philanthropy has two essential components:
Derby Weeklong
The Derby Weeklong is the signature event of the Sigma Chi philanthropy. Derby serves as a chance to both promote the Huntsman initiative to end cancer, raise money for the cause, and unify the community with engaging philanthropic events.
Derby takes place in spring and consists of a week of philanthropic frenzy, with major events and boothing taking place every day. All proceeds go to Huntsman Cancer institute. More info on Huntsman and statistics below.
Boothing
Boothing is the go-to strategy for the Eta Sigma Philanthropy team outside of the Derby Weeklong period. Boothing allows the philanthropy team to establish a physical presence in Irvine to promote the cause while raising money.
Boothing also allows the philanthropy team to promote upcoming off-campus events while giving Irvine residents the opportunity to engage personally with the Sigs, as good relations are essential to a successful philanthropy.
Huntsman Cancer Institute/Foundation
Huntsman Cancer Institute is a cancer research center part of the University of Utah based in Salt Lake City. In 2012, Sigma Chi International Fraternity partnered with Huntsman and began directing its philanthropic efforts towards the cause of ending women's cancer. Since that time, Sigma Chi has raised over $11 million, with another $20 million pledged in 2019.
We are the generation to end cancer.
